WHO IS EVA ROTHWELL?

Eva Rothwell was born in 1913 and attended Robert Land School as a child. She married Frank Palonek, and they continued to live in the Keith neighborhood, at 103 Shaw St. They were both active members of the community and owned a store in the neighborhood. Eva enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom and looking after her children Janet and Edward Palonek, who also attended Robert Land School. She took part in fundraising for many worthy causes and loved to give back to her community.

When Robert Land School closed in 2004 community developer Don MacVicar and the citizens of Hamilton’s North End railed together to transform the school into a much needed community resource centre. Eva’s son, Edward Palonek carried on the spirit of giving to his community with his significant donation to secure the purchase of the building, and the centre was named in his mother’s honor. Today, the Eva Rothwell Centre carries on her tradition of giving back to the community with an ever growing number of educational and recreational programs and essential services that help to improve the quality of life and social well-being for the Hamilton community.
